All Aboard the Struggle Bus of Intolerance

There are points in my life where I just have to sit back and wonder why people have to be so damn extra about things. Like when middle aged white women act like spoiled toddlers when not catered to at restaurants in just the right fashion, or when sorority girls talk about how much they love and adore their big, who they met seriously like 5 minutes ago, but they can already feel the love and deep bond that they just now share.

Or, I don’t know, when two conservative groups band together and decide that a giant orange transgender shaming monstrosity on four wheels is a good idea, and will undoubtedly change many minds and convert people to their backwards way of thinking.

Here’s the giant orange doom rectangle now:

Sponsors of the giant tangerine doom-mobile told BBC news that they wanted to promote the “truth of gender” and think that gender is defined by biology rather than emotions. The bus was met with protests in Boston, where their mayor gave a speech on the city’s support of the transgender community. The bus had its very first stop in New York, where it was promptly vandalized in record time.

A spokesman for one of the organizations that funded the marigold harassment wagon said that he was “disappointed that people who preach tolerance and acceptance reacted to the bus by lashing out”.

He was disappointed? Disappointed that his attempt at dividing people and causing prejudice and hate backfired? What exactly was he expecting when he paraded this thing through New York, one of the most, if not THE most, diverse and modern places in our country?

The organizations clearly wanted to turn people against the transgender community, but this is absurd. They called out an entire people, not for the North Dakota Access Pipeline fiasco, not for the lack of action in Flint, Michigan and certainly not for the recent spike in human trafficking abductions across the country.

No, they have decided to go after a community of people who are just trying to liberate themselves and become who they are in the pursuit of their own happiness.

Calling out transgender individuals like this is wrong and, frankly, inhumane. There was no other agenda for the bus other than promoting their truth about how they perceive biology and gender. They were not looking for a bathroom bill, they simply wanted to voice their opinion on how people should live their lives, as you can clearly see from their campaign’s page.

The ‘free speech bus’ has been met with opposition, with “trans rights” being written on the sides and the front window being smashed in when the bus parked in front of the United Nations headquarters, according to the Washington Post.

But resistance to the campaign has also been met online, in the form of a brand new video game.  The game allows you to play as a beloved video game character and beat up the bus. imrs

The protests, vandalism and video game depicts just how unwanted this campaign is, especially along the East Coast, where all of its stops are. People have begun calling the bus the ‘hate speech bus.’

The campaign itself has no place in modern times, and with no clear purpose other than spreading hate and intolerance, public outcry has shown just that.

Jeff Varner, What Were You Thinking? We All Want To Know.

I wasn’t sure what to write about for this week’s refutation, but then I was told about what happened on survivor… I don’t ’ even like that show and I don’t keep up with it which is why I had no idea what had happened this past week. If you are just as lost as I was, let me catch you up. So, a dumbass contestant named Jeff Varner decided it would be a dandy idea to go ahead and out another contestant, Zeke Smith, as transgender on national television without permission. I’m just as shook as you.

He said, and I quote “Deceptions on levels, Jeff, that these guys don’t even understand.” He was then prompted by the host, who I assume is also named Jeff, to continue. He turned to Zeke and asked “Why haven’t you told anyone that you’re transgender?” Excuse you, Jeff Warner, but how is that any of your business and what does that have to do with “the game.”

“What I’m showing is a deception,” he also said (*rolls eyes*) (video). What are you implying, Jeff Warner? Are you implying that Zeke was deceiving people by not telling them he was transgender? Well, that’s exactly how Zeke felt. As quoted in The Guardian,’“In proclaiming ‘Zeke is not the guy you think he is’ and that ‘there is deception on levels y’all don’t understand,’ Varner is saying that I’m not really a man,” Smith continues, “and that simply living as my authentic self is a nefarious trick. In reality, by being Zeke the dude, I am being my most honest self – as is every other transgender person going about their daily lives.”’ You know what? He is absolutely right. That is one of the biggest problems in the transgender community. People claim they are always trying to deceive people by “pretending” to be a different gender for various reasons (mainly simple minded people think they are using it as an excuse to be a pervert but that’s a whole other argument). People need to get that idea out of their heads and humans like Jeff Varner are not helping! Jeff did show remorse for his actions though. He said in the same The Guardian article that his actions were a “mistake” and that he is “deeply saddened.” Aw boo hoo.

I’m sorry, but what do you have to be sad about? You’re the one who who revealed extremely personal information that was probably told to you in confidence. Are you sad that it backfired? Are you sad about all the backlash? In my opinion, you are getting what you deserve. Bad decisions have consequences and you made a REALLY bad decision. Consider yourself READ.

Mind your own ____.

Okay so I was going to post discussing a different topic at first but when I saw this article I couldn’t pass it up. Have you ever seen something so ridiculous you’re at a loss for words? Well brace yourself, folks. A restaurant in Oklahoma City, which is said to be quite popular (not sure how when it makes customers feel this unwelcomed) has issued a warning to it’s transgender customers. Unlike the Steak and Catfish Barn in Oklahoma City, I’m genuinely warning you: Watch your back when dining at this restaurant. The restaurant owner, Bob Warner allowed a sign to be displayed in his business’ window which threatened transgender customers (see below):

Hmm..even though Warner claims he’s just looking out for his business and the well being of others, it sounds a bit like… a threat. (Hey, I just call ‘em as I see ‘em.) Warner said according to The Blaze, “We have a lot of redneck guys that come in here…If their wife or their little girl walked in that bathroom and a man followed them in there, I wouldn’t have a restaurant.” Wow… let’s give it up for this guy! What a hero! So selfless!

Is this guy serious? That’s his best excuse? Hey buddy, if you’re so concerned why not make a gender neutral bathroom?! Or as some may like to call it a FAMILY BATHROOM. *oohhs and aahhs erupt from the crowd*

Warner argues that we should keep children and women safe by not allowing transgender customers to use the bathroom of the gender they IDENTIFY with. He adds that they can use the bathroom if they “dress appropriately”. And no he doesn’t elaborate. Umm excuse me…what does that even mean?! Are sweatpants allowed or is that too casual?

It’s people like Warner who claim to not be transphobic or homophobic that are stopping us from progressing. They’re stereotypical and prejudice and pretend they’re doing it all for the common good. He’s essentially making an accusation that transgender individuals are predators. There have been studies that show transgender individuals are more likely to encounter problems when using a public restroom. A report at UCLA said close to 70% of transgender people experienced verbal harassment and near 10% experienced physical assault when using public restroom ( When was the last time you were attacked in a bathroom, Warner? Why force someone who identifies as a woman or man to go into the other gender’s bathroom where they can potentially be assaulted? He doesn’t seem THAT concerned about the wellbeing of his customers now, does he?

Also can someone please break the news to him…if someone wants to peep on people in the restroom they’re probably already doing it. Some freaky guy down the street can dress up as a woman and creep into the ladies’ room with or without transgender people being allowed in it. So Warner, you ain’t helping…SO STOP.

I don’t know about you guys but I have no problem using the bathroom with someone who is transgender. I’m not worried about being assaulted by a transgender person in the restroom either. Transgender people want to do their business and get the hell out just like you and I; because let’s face it those public restrooms are NAAAASSSSTTTYYYYY.

This is about much more than the bathroom, it’s about safety, dignity, respect and equality. How can you expect someone to go to your business when you can’t even let them do theirs without threatening them? You can’t preach to be helping the common good and then blatantly discriminate.

Until next time friends…and remember do your business and stay out of other people’s. 😉

Texas Bathroom Bill

Light needs to be shed on this ongoing issue that transgender individuals in some states are not being allowed access into public restrooms that don’t correspond to the gender on their birth certificates. These government officials that make these so called rules are only discriminating against transgender individuals that just want to be accepted for being themselves. This issue has gone on for far too long and justice needs to be brought for these individuals that are going through this for once and for all. The people of Texas need to know that this proposed ‘bathroom bill’ is immoral and it will cost the state millions of dollars.

A news article written January 11th, 2017 titled, “Texas Lt Gov. Not Worried About Bathroom Bill Costing The State Money,” by Huffington Post reporter Roque Planas talks about the Lieutenant governor of Texas Dan Patrick arguing his reasoning for why the anti-trans bathroom bill in Texas will not be costly to the state. This article highlights Patrick explaining that his bathroom bill differs from that of North Carolina’s bathroom bill which has been a huge financial burden for North Carolina due to many boycotts by businesses, sporting events, and more. Patrick states that the difference between his bill and North Carolina’s bill are his bill omits the term ‘original birth certificate,’ which allows trans-gender people to change the gender on their birth certificate. North Carolina’s bill makes no distinction between original birth certificates or current birth certificates. He even goes far enough to say, “when we introduce men into ladies’ room, we introduce a danger…. It’s not the transgender community, because they can get their birth certificates changed if it’s legitimate.” This is a fabricated threat made up to target trans people. If a man was planning to harm a women in a bathroom (god forbid) then this bill would be the last thing to stop that from happening. A man would not need to first pose and dress as a women to do so.

The Texas bill is actually very comparable to the North Carolina bill. Mara Keisling, the head of the National Center for Transgender Equality, demonstrates this as she mentions, “the Texas bathroom bill is just as discriminatory as North Carolina’s.” A survey conducted by her group found that because of bureaucratic obstacles and high costs of changing gender on birth certificates, only 9% of transgender people would actually change their gender on their birth certificate. Also, according to Wired magazine the North Carolina bill cost them a lot of money, $400 million in six months to be exact. Texas would take an even bigger hit as the state’s economy is one the largest. Transgender men who identify as ladies are not causing any harm going into the ladies room and vice versa. This bill should be dropped and we should give trans people the freedom of identifying as they please and allow them to embrace themselves.
